Danielson family fishing, day two: sharks!

The Florida Keys fishing adventure continues with Dinner and a Show!

When you book a fishing trip in the Keys, you need to be flexible as to what type of fishing you’ll actually get to do.  Weather plays a big role in our fishing opportunities.  Fortunately, with the various Atlantic, Gulf, Bay and Bridge venues, there’s some place and some species to fish for just about regardless of the weather.  Unless it’s extremely windy or raining sheets with lightning thrown in.

The Danielson family booked one of our Ironman trips … dolphin fishing on one outing and tarpon fishing on another.  Well, they got their tarpon trip in.  But, conditions were just not comfortable for offshore fishing.  No big deal, really.  We moved their trip to another day and they had a blast with Dinner and a Show!

The crew handily put an excellent catch of 26 delicious mangrove snapper in the box, which they dined on at Porky’s.

With dinner taken care of, we set off for the shark grounds, where they caught and released 8 large lemons.  The girls even landed a couple on 15-lb test!

As usual, everyone had their turn at reeling in big, toothy critters.

And, the sharks cooperated nicely for their photo opps.

Anglers: Darrell and Jan Danielson, form Milton-Freewater OR, Jason and Mandi Danielson, from Toutle WA, Kory and Kelly Danielson, from Kennewick WA

Charter Type: Dinner and a Show

Fishing Venue: Florida Bay

Species Caught: 26 mangrove snapper and 8 lemon sharks

Danielson family fishing, day one: tarpon!

They came all the way from Washington and Oregon to catch the Silver King!

Darrell said he’d been lifting 20-pound dumbbells in preparation for the Danielson family fishing trip to the Florida Keys.  They’ve watched tarpon fishing shows on TV many times and were so happy to finally live their dream!

We had four bites on this trip.  One jumped off.  Two gave us a good 10- to 15-minute fight – jumped – and then ran through the bridge pilings and broke off.

Darrell landed the fourth, a nice 90-pounder!

Marathon Florida Keys Weekly Fishing Report – April 22, 2012

The sailfish are here in large numbers just in time for the World Sailfish Championship in Key West.

Sailfish

The last couple of days, multiple boats have come back to the dock with 15 to 20 sailfish flags flying.  I said it a couple of weeks ago.  The sailfish must migrate through the Keys to the Gulf waters to spawn so when they finally show up, it will be in full force.

Florida Bay and Everglades

Due to the windy conditions of late, many charter Captains have been fishing in Florida Bay and the Everglades areas, where they’re having great success with mangrove snapper and sea trout.

Reef and wrecks

When the winds subside by this evening, the reef bite will be excellent again for yellowtail, mutton and mangrove snapper.  As we get closer to May, more and more muttons show up on the wrecks and rough bottom areas throughout the Keys, and they will bite aggressively.

Dolphin

The dolphin bite will respond well to calming conditions as well, with plenty of schoolie size fish and increasing numbers of slammers in the catches.

Permit

There are still plenty of permit providing great rod-bending action on the wrecks and artificial reefs.  These fish average 25 to 30 pounds.

Tarpon

The windy conditions have turned the bridge waters a bit muddy.  When they clear up, tarpon fishing will be back on track with the population growing day by day.

Sharks

Another excellent windy day alternative – and just plain fun on any day – is catch-and-release fishing for sharks in Florida Bay.  These shallow water areas hold massive numbers of lemon, blacktip, nurse, bonnet head and other species of shark.

Battling a six- or seven-foot toothy critter on light spin tackle is an adrenaline rush for even the most seasoned angler!

The week’s best catches

April continues with good and varied fishing aboard the SeaSquared!

We had the pleasure to host families and groups of friends for all sorts of fishing … mangrove snapper, sea trout and sharks in Florida Bay, yellowtail snapper on the reef and tarpon at Bahia Honda.

First time’s a charm!

The Holland family (and friends) had a blast on their first Florida Keys vacation!

They were interested in having the experience of being on the water and seeing the variety of fish we have here in Marathon.  They wanted to keep just enough good-eating fish for dinner at Porky’s.

We fished on a Bay bank and caught mangrove snapper to about three pounds.

Then we switched gears and went to a channel cut for some fun fishing.  The crew caught jack crevalle, yellowjack, yellowtail and more mangrove snapper – all on Berkley Gulp Shrimp.

Nora even got a SeaSquared hat!

Anglers: Pete, Kristine, Andrew and Nora Holland and Nora’s friends, Fiona and Grace, from West Hartford CT

Charter Type: Half Day

Fishing Venue: Florida Bay

Species Caught: mangrove and yellowtail snapper, jack crevalle, yellowjack

First tarpon trip of 2012

Hooked and lost three tarpon on today’s trip.

The first and third tarpon hooked up jumped and broke off almost immediately.  The second, on the other hand, never jumped but gave Chris quite a run for his money through the bridge pilings before getting cut off.

The tarpon population is definitely thick at Bahia Honda, so the season is on.  Had we stayed a little longer, Chris and Gregg would have landed them.

Anglers: Chris Innace, from Shirley NY, and Gregg Visintin, from Lake Grove NY

Charter Type: Tarpon

Fishing Venue: Bahia Honda Bridge
